Antique elm wood sideboard – China, circa 1950

This antique elm wood sideboard features two doors with a framed perimeter and a central reserve top on each, set on a simple lower rail. It originates from China, dating to the mid-20th century, where elm was crafted using traditional mortise and tenon joinery while retaining classic Qing typologies. Chinese furniture from the mid-20th century has maintained traditional construction logic with a more understated formal language compared to pieces from the late Qing period. Sideboards with two doors and solid sides have remained the standard typology, now with cleaner surfaces and less decorative carving, adjusted to 20th-century tastes.
