D70 sofa bed by Osvaldo Borsani for Tecno, 1954

'D70' sofa/daybed, designed by Osvaldo Borsani and manufactured by Tecno, Italy, 1954. This customizable D70 sofa has two pivoting wings, a very stable metal frame, and beautiful, fresh olive green fabric upholstery. The opening mechanism consists of a lever with a securing pin that engages holes in a graduated plate. The mechanism is effortlessly operated by a beautifully crafted brass knob and allows the back and seat to assume any angle and fold down to form a bed. With a single rotation, the back and seat can be positioned up or down. This iconic 'D70' sofa bed was presented at the Individual Furniture Exhibition of the 10th Milan Triennale in 1954. The highly visible mechanical articulation expressed Osvaldo Borsani's determination to design and manufacture original furniture, autonomous and elegant in form, yet technical and industrial in production.
