Oil on canvas. The large Baroque scene is entirely filled with several figures, intertwined and layered, although at different levels of depth. Sitting in the centre is the Virgin, surrounded by the other figures: in her arms is the Child Jesus, leaning sideways towards Saint John the Baptist, who holds his cross topped with the banner bearing the inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei"; in the background, to the left, is an angel, looking adoringly at the two children; to the right, a saint, identifiable as Saint Dominic by his iconographic attributes: his Dominican habit, but especially the star (or North Star) on his forehead, indicating his ability to guide people to Christ, and the lily he holds, a symbol of purity. The dynamism of the figures is accentuated by the colours of the characters, particularly those of Mary's robe: the red of her tunic, echoed by the book half-hidden behind Jesus, which she holds in one hand, and the blue with yellow edges of her mantle, which is also found in the angel's robe. The range of skin tones is also remarkably varied, with a striking contrast between the pallor of the Child Jesus's body and the tanned complexion of John the Baptist. The work has undergone restoration and re-stretching in the past. It is presented in a period frame.
