Beautiful engraving enhanced from the eighteenth. " view of the palace of the temple to the knights of malta, on the side of the garden, where the grand prior of france, now monsignor the prince of conti, is housed, taken from the side of the street" Golden frame rubbed in a few places. Well framed, under glass, with her sky blue marie louise and golden net. Frame dimensions: 63cm X 39cm. Dimension to the bowl: 48cm X 24cm. Technique: etching - chisel. This suite, begun by jacques rigaud (1680-1754), was completed by his nephew and successor, jean-baptiste. Rigaud first sold his plates separately and then they were combined into a collection, each with a different number of plates, the whole being announced by an engraved title sheet, first in the author's name "chez l'auteur, rue saint-jacques", then "chez chereau et basan", then "jombert et basan", and, in the nineteenth century, "chez treuttel et wurtz". This suite renewed the picturesque view by an almost photographic attention to detail as well as by the long format chosen by the artist. The engraved part is always of the same format. The steeled copper plate used to make this engraving is kept at the louvre museum, in the chalcography department (graphic arts of the museum) http: //arts-graphiques.louvre.fr/detail/oeuvres/22/535382-vue-du-palais-du-temple-aux-chevaliers-de-malte-ou-loge-le-grand-prieur-de-france-aujourdhui-monseigneur-le-prince-de-conti) The chalcography of the louvre was founded in 1797 by the gathering of several collections of engravings constituted under the ancien régime. Previously, printmakers were more often regarded as craftsmen than as true artists and did not have official recognition. In 1660, thanks to the intervention of robert nanteuil, the king took a decision of the council which granted them legal status. From then on, the engravers had a much more regular production. The first sign of importance that marked the interest of king fu.
