Magnificent colonial marine trunk made of camphor wood from the late 19th century - likely manufactured in South Asia or China. Brass fittings and leather straps (fully restored). The camphor wood was particularly valued for sea travel. Its characteristic aromatic scent acted as a natural repellent against insects (such as moths) and effectively protected clothing and documents from moisture and mould. It features superb corner brackets and riveted solid brass fittings, designed to reinforce the structure against shocks during transport. The leather straps and handles for carrying have been completely restored. The interior of this trunk reveals a keepsake trunk characterised by red fabric upholstery and an impressive collection of postcards and advertisements for MELIA cigarettes (Algiers).
