A magnificent antique travel and dowry trunk dating to the early 20th century, in remarkably complete and well-preserved condition for an object over 100 years old — and accompanied by its original shipping document, a rare and compelling piece of provenance that most trunks of this age have long since lost. The construction is traditional and robust: a wooden frame clad in hammered brass sheet, the surface beautifully aged to a warm, mottled patina that catches the light like old silk. Black painted metal reinforcing straps divide the panels at regular intervals, their riveted joints still tight and secure. Wooden slat trim in warm brown runs along all edges, protecting the corners and adding a warm contrast to the brass. The hardware is original throughout — three substantial brass latch fittings across the front, a central lock plate, a carrying handle on the lid — all functioning, all original. Inside, the trunk would have contained a young woman's entire worldly possessions as she moved to her new home — linen, clothing, household items, the material foundation of a new life. Today it makes an extraordinary coffee table, a blanket chest, a storage piece for a hallway or bedroom, or simply a sculptural object that brings a century of history into a contemporary interior. The original shipping document — included with the piece — transforms this from a beautiful antique object into a genuine historical artifact. Dimensions: 76 × 47 × 53 cm.
