2 magnificent colonial marine trunks made of camphor wood from the late 19th century - likely manufactured in South Asia or China. Brass fittings and leather straps (refurbished). Camphor wood was particularly prized for sea travel. Its characteristic aromatic scent acted as a natural repellent against insects (such as moths) and effectively protected clothing and documents from moisture and mould. It features superb corner brackets and riveted solid brass fittings, designed to reinforce the structure against shocks during transport. The leather straps and handles for carrying have been completely refurbished. Inside these trunks is a true treasure: souvenir photos, postcards from all the places the trunks have passed through, and an impressive collection of advertisements for MELIA cigarettes (Algiers)... on a red fabric upholstery.
