Artist's biography: Gilbert portanier was born in cannes in 1926. Around the age of 17, he felt the taste for the arts born in him. In 1945, he went to paris to study architecture at ensba, he quickly turned to painting and drawing, which he soon studied as a self-taught artist. In 1948, after a stay in brussels, he returned to the french riviera where, during a visit to vallauris, he discovered the world of ceramics and met picasso. In 1949, he and his friends albert diato and francine del pierre created a small workshop, which they called "le triptyque", where they began together the self-taught learning of ceramics. In 1954, he moved into a traditional pottery where he went to have extensive workshops, finding a mythical place of ceramics where all the possibilities of an art still untouched are open to him. He learns the multiple techniques associated with them and creates his own figurative language, abstract, suggestive, materialized by a versatile graphics of great freedom. His palette of colours betrays the painter's sensibility by his richness and intensity. For portanier, ceramics is a way of translating the feelings, emotions and pleasures of life. He is a colorist and a connoisseur of enamel, as well as a virtuoso of drawing. In 2018, the creation of the gilbert portanier foundation located 8 potiers road in vallauris. In 1964, gilbert portanier was in contact with the german porcelain maker rosenthal, for whom he soon created very original models (where his brand can be found) that would be a great international success. From 1966 to 2009, he exhibited regularly in the rosenthal studio-huuser in hamburg, bochum, dortmund, cologne, mannheim, stuttgart, paris, milan, geneva, amsterdam...
