This vintage art deco erpé desk lamp dates from around the 1920's and is in truly exquisite condition. This exemple has a dark green enamel shade embossed with the letters erpé, a black steel rod with an (early version) layered base. Period: 1920-1930. The letters "erpé" stands for "etablissements ritzen & penners" and refers to its fouders leon ritzen and frans penners whom started manufacturing industrial work lamps in brussels around 1920. Later the name erpé was changed to erpe. The reason for this still remains a mystery. Because of the functionality and simplicity, typical for the bauhaus movement, erpé lamps became popular which led to the production of office desk lamps, often referred to as bankers or notary desk lamps. This layered base model is one of the first more commercial designs. Most famous was the model 52 with black bakelite shade. A timeless art deco desk lamp in perfect condition that looks good in every interior.
