A rare and characterful set of four Italian church chairs manufactured by Caloi of Conegliano Veneto, distinguished by their sculptural silhouette, hand-carved details, and beautifully aged walnut patina. Originally produced for ecclesiastical interiors, these chairs embody the restrained elegance and craftsmanship of post-war Italian furniture making. Each chair features a tall, gently curved backrest centered by a distinctive pierced cross motif, a reference to their liturgical origin. The robust frame is enriched by decorative X-form stretchers and finely shaped uprights, creating a design that feels both architectural and surprisingly light. The seats retain their original carved wooden panels, each stamped by the maker and decorated with an elaborate relief carving depicting a stylized scallop shell and baroque-inspired ornamentation—a motif historically associated with pilgrimage and religious symbolism. The chairs have been gently restored, with careful attention given to preserving their authentic character. The original finish has been refreshed only where necessary, allowing the rich walnut tones, natural wear, and accumulated patina developed over decades of use to remain visible. The result is a set that presents beautifully while retaining the depth and warmth sought after by collectors and designers. Their combination of historical provenance, decorative carving, and strong architectural presence makes them equally suitable for a dining room, entrance hall, boutique hospitality setting, or as accent chairs within a curated interior.
