Scandinavian teak side table, 1960s

Rectangular teak side table with a large open compartment at the front and a four-leg structure. Scandinavian production, 1960s. Dating from the 1960s, this Scandinavian side table is crafted in teak and distinguished by the particular construction of its upper section. Beneath the rectangular top is a large open compartment, accessible from the front and closed at the back. Along the short sides of the top, two slender inserts in darker wood create an elegant chromatic contrast with the teak and visually accentuate the ends of the surface. The base of the compartment projects slightly beyond the side panels and rests on the structure below, formed by four straight, rectangular-section legs, set back from the ends of the piece and connected by stretchers. The lower section remains completely open, contrasting with the compact volume of the compartment above. The broad surfaces highlight the warm tones and grain of the teak, while the two darker inserts introduce a subtle graphic detail that breaks up the continuity of the top. The table thus combines a very simple construction with a few carefully considered details, relying on the wood and the relationship between solid and open areas for much of its character.
