Éditions Complément d'Objet, Martot, 2010, reproduced on page 34. *Born in 1930 in Nantes, young Joël Baudouin, suffering from tuberculosis, devoted himself to drawing and painting in his room for several years. After secondary studies in Nantes, he entered the Fine Arts in Angers and followed the teachings of painter-ceramicist Paul Maudonnet. In the 1950s, he went to Paris to study painting with Fernand Léger and André Lhote, then sculpture with Zadkine at the Grande Chaumière Academy. In 1952, he headed to Egypt, where he directed the pottery craft centre in Garagos with Robert de Montgolfier. In 1957, he settled in Vallauris as a ceramicist and spent three years mingling with the great names of ceramics such as Picasso, Gilbert Portanier, Roger Capron, Jean Derval... Success followed with exhibitions of his sculptures at the Nérolium. (For the record: Picasso, who settled in Vallauris in 1948, participated in exhibitions of local artists and craftsmen. He created the poster for this event until 1964, gifting the original copy to the potters' association, which became A.V.E.C in 1957). In 1960, Joël Baudouin left the south to settle in Durtal (Maine and Loire) as a painter and ceramicist. By the late 1960s, stoneware was in vogue, and he created the brand 'les Grès du Maine': success was on the horizon, with over 50 people working in his workshops to produce glazed tiles. In 1982, he sold the company 'Les Grès du Maine'. He then dedicated himself to painting and large-scale ceramic sculpture made with coiled chamotte clay.
