In the hands of a French blacksmith working in the Gothic style in the 1940s, a twelve-light chandelier was not an ordinary commission. It implied a space of prestige — a castle vestibule, a gallery staircase hall, a library in the neo-Gothic style — and required the master craftsman to master balance, with the twelve arms arranged in a crown to avoid the visual disorder that too many candles too freely distributed could produce. This piece meets that requirement with clarity. The 65-centimetre diameter contains twelve arms with disciplined economy, the forged scrolls at each junction maintaining a visual rhythm around the circumference. The central column is robust and well-articulated, typical of the best provincial workshop work of the 1940s, a period when wrought iron continued to thrive in France as a material of prestige, even as bronze and cast iron were constrained by the economic restrictions of war. The Gothic vocabulary — pointed bobèches, foliage scrolls, a silhouette rising towards a crown — is applied with confidence rather than archaeological pedantry. This chandelier offers the collector a piece of dimension and symbolic resonance rarely encountered at this quality.
