6 French Antique Asparagus Plates in Majolica

Provencal french antique flour box, 'fariniere', For many decades, or for that matter centuries, virtually every french provencal kitchen had a special box for flouring fish ('farine' is the french word for flour). Often these boxes are described as for storing four but that is not correct. Much as a modern cook might flour small fish by shaking it in a bag, so was this item used. This is one of those emblematic items that was in most kitchens of provence, but now they are rarely found, especially in good condition...and they are highly collectable. This example likely dates from the late 1800s/early 1900s given its style and naive decoration. This 'fariniere' is in a traditional shape, like a little piece of furniture, with a sliding front panel. This antique farinere was hand-crafted and is decorated with a naive carving of a pair of quite graceful fish, echoing its intended use. This fine fariniere, with its charming decoration is in excellent antique condition. There is very minor damage to the flower motif at the upper center front, hardly noticeable at all, but some wear or a small flaw or two is expected in these very old and used boxes, This piece a fine and authentic 'provencal' touch to a country french kitchen decor. The approximate measurements are a tall 15 1/2 inches, 5 inches deep, and 8 inches wide across the front.
