Wedding chest of popular art, circa 1850

Marriage chest made of central European pine, probably German, dating from the 1850s. The terracotta red colour, typical of this style, is often found on painted Swedish and German furniture and recalls the classical era. The flowers that adorn the chest symbolise eternal life. As these chests often served as seats, the paint on the lid has faded.
