Eclectic sugar bowl, silver-plated brass, Poland, 19th century

A rectangular sugar bowl from the 19th century, made in Poland in the eclectic style, features a classic box form with a solid construction. The dominant material is brass covered with a layer of silver, visible in the warm, golden tone with a slight, subdued patina. The surface is decorated with guilloche – a precise, diamond pattern created by machine engraving, covering both the sides and the gently convex lid. In the centre of the lid is a blank cartouche, once intended for a monogram, surrounded by decorative beaded borders. The whole piece stands on four cast feet with a motif of stylised leaves, typical of 19th-century craftsmanship. Visible hinges and a small, rounded handle make it easy to use. The condition is good – the sugar bowl has minor scratches and local discolourations, and the natural patina emphasises its age; there are no major damages or signs of repair. This sugar bowl carries the echo of the nineteenth-century table – its boxy shape and intricate guilloche tell of times when detail was a sign of status and every item had a role in the daily ritual of hospitality. The matte brass surface and gently shimmering edges reflect light like the flicker of candles during family gatherings, and the empty cartouche silently recalls past homes where the owners' initials were a mark of identity and pride.
