A utilitarian piece that sits between a merchant's box (kakebako) and a domestic kitchen box, representative of 20th-century Japanese woodworking in its most honest interpretation. In Japanese tradition, open wooden boxes were used in kitchens, workshops, and shops as versatile containers: for salt, flour, small tools, stationery, or weights. The hand-carved hollow handle on one side allowed it to be lifted with one hand. Its ostensible construction—visible joints, never hidden—reflects the Japanese principle of showcasing the quality of craftsmanship rather than concealing it. It is constructed from lightweight wood (probably paulownia or sugi), with the four corners joined with visible dovetail joints, internal corner reinforcements, and a recessed base that serves as a pedestal. The side handle, shaped like a drop, is carved directly from the board and retains its original thickness without losing strength.
