Ancient Chinese wooden basket with iron bands, square-shaped and smooth sides, reinforced on the edges, corners, and base with forged iron bands, and equipped with an iron handle on one side. Originating from China, from the end of the Qing dynasty, this type of container — called dou (斗) — was used as a standard grain measure in rural markets and granaries in the north. Grain measures were part of the standard equipment for Chinese agricultural trade until the early 20th century. Examples with iron bands were designed for intensive use in outdoor markets: the metal reinforcement protected the edges from the repeated impact of the ladle and the corners from wear under load. Each granary or guild marked its pieces with a stamp or its own numbering. Details. Dimensions: Length 33 cm – Depth 28 cm – Height 16.5 cm. Style: Qing Dynasty. Materials and techniques: Solid wood with forged iron bands and handle; visible dovetail joints; forged square-headed nails. Place of origin: China. Period: Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) Date of manufacture: Circa 1900. Condition / Observations: Good. Wear consistent with age and use.
