Painted Folk Art Bridal Trunk

Beautiful painted bridal chest from southern Germany, specifically Franconia. The chest has a very rustic appearance and displays plenty of character. The entire piece is primarily painted in a soft blue and decorated with panels featuring floral and religious paintings. This original paint is quite worn (especially on the lid), giving it a highly decorative appearance. The chest is in neat, but used condition. There are occasional traces of old woodworm, which have of course been checked and treated. There are also some old repairs on the interior, and the chest was later fitted with sled feet so that it sits slightly off the ground. It was once customary to give bridal furniture like this to the couple at a wedding. These pieces were later placed in a stateroom on the farm, rarely used for distinguished guests or special occasions. A beautiful and decorative piece of history. 52cm high, 129cm wide, 66cm deep.
