Roger chapelain midy (1904-1992) Watercolor signed and titled lower left "barge". 48 x64 cm without frame. 69 X 87 cm with frame. Price 480€. Roger chapelain, known as chapelain-midy, born august 24, 1904 in paris, died april 1, 1992 in paris, was a french painter, lithographer and decorator. He added to his name that of his mother's second husband. He studied at the école des beaux-arts in paris, then in the academies of montparnasse. He exhibited in 1927 at the salon d'automne, and from 1929 at the salon des indépendants and the salon des tuileries. He is a professor at the école nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. Passionate about the renaissance, by the painting of poussin and that of the seventeenth century, he defends a classical tradition, made of measure, in an era that sees the great upheavals of modern painting. He creates still lifes and landscapes. He travels extensively, both in europe and in north and south america. He made wall decorations (town hall of the fourth arrondissement of paris, home of the national theater of chaillot, agronomic institute of paris) as well as decorations of liners, including the france. Valéry giscard d'estaing, then president of the french republic, commissioned him to paint a portrait of general de gaulle for the élysée palace in paris. A theatre decorator and costume designer, he worked for rameau's les indes galantes (1952), mozart's the magic flute at the paris opera (1955). He also wrote illustrations by giraudoux, gide, baudelaire, fontenelle, la fontaine, vildrac, simenon (la fenêtre des rouet, 1945), etc. He illustrated the cover of michel mourlet's chanson de maguelonne for the round table (1973). He was awarded the carnegie prize in 1938. He was an official painter of the navy and received a commission from general de gaulle to execute his portrait, intended for the elysée palace. Between symbolism and surrealism, a whole part of his work bears the imprint of his concerns.
