This antique low cabinet made of solid elm, with two doors and a geometric openwork apron, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1950. It does not retain a manufacturer's label and is described by typology and region. Low cabinets with two doors and a low openwork apron were common pieces in rural homes, where they served as living room furniture or narrow buffets. The openwork allowed for ventilation inside and visually lightened the structure. The frame is assembled using blind mortise and tenon joints. The flat doors with large panels pivot on wooden axes and close with original wrought iron rings. Below the doors, a geometric openwork apron spans the front and completes the artisanal appearance. The patina displays the characteristic light tone of elm weathered by time, with deep grain and darker areas on the edges where use has left its mark. The openwork retains all of its original joints and a beautiful rhythm of cutting. It functions as a narrow buffet, an entryway piece, or a support piece in a large bathroom. Its openwork apron and contained volume integrate into a wabi-sabi, japandi, or rustic-contemporary interior, adding an artisanal detail without overwhelming the space. Details.
