Danish solid teak wood platter on profiled base, 1970s Scandinavian craftsmanship

This Danish teak platter from the 1970s exemplifies the Scandinavian approach to functional craft, where natural materials and restrained form create objects of quiet elegance. Solid wood, shaped with precision and finished to reveal the grain's inherent beauty, transforms an everyday serving piece into something worth displaying. The platter rises on a distinctly profiled foot that elevates the wide, shallow bowl and lends the piece an air of lightness. With a diameter approaching forty centimetres, the gently curved dish offers generous surface area while the proportioned base provides stability and visual balance. Solid teak construction means the natural grain pattern varies subtly across the surface, becoming the only ornamentation this minimalist design requires. The transition from base to bowl flows in one continuous line, typical of Scandinavian mid-century sensibility that favoured organic shapes over angular geometry. Danish woodcraft of the 1970s drew upon centuries of tradition shaped by northern climate and the intimate relationship between Scandinavian culture and forest materials. Teak, though imported, became synonymous with Danish design during this era, prized for its durability, resistance to moisture, and warm brown tones that deepened with age. Turned wooden objects such as platters, bowls and boards were often produced in small workshops where craftsmen combined traditional lathe techniques with the modernist preference for unadorned surfaces and functional beauty. A platter of this size serves admirably as a table centrepiece for gatherings, accommodating fruit arrangements, bread or appetisers with ease. Beyond the dining room, it works equally well as a decorative element on a sideboard, console table or entryway. Condition is assessed as good. The surface shows scratches consistent with years of use.
