Exceptional Art Deco walnut sideboard with slatted glass display - 1930s

We are incredibly proud to present a museum-quality masterpiece of Art Deco design from Central Europe. This monumental two-piece buffet (comprising a large base cabinet and an upper display section) dates from the 1930s and perfectly embodies the luxurious aesthetic of Streamline Moderne. Design and Craftsmanship. The architectural silhouette of this piece features smooth, aerodynamic curves resting on a massive and elegant sled base. The visual focal point is the breathtaking woodwork on the doors of the lower cabinet. The master cabinetmaker used premium walnut veneer, arranging it in a highly demanding four-way pattern (diamond or cross pattern). This technique creates a fascinating, symmetrical, and kaleidoscopic grain effect that elevates the piece to the status of a work of art. However, the rarest feature is found in the upper display cabinet. Instead of using a single piece of curved glass for the corners, the transparent arches are constructed from dozens of fine vertical glass strips. This was an incredibly costly and complex artisanal technique in the 1930s, which beautifully refracts light and adds an unparalleled quality, akin to that of a jewel, to the furniture. Restoration and Finish. This buffet has undergone a complete and uncompromising restoration in our specialised workshop. All degraded historical varnishes have been carefully removed down to the bare wood. We then finished the entire exterior with a premium hard wax oil. This modern, high-end treatment protects the wood from water and daily wear while providing a stunning natural satin-matte touch, allowing the depth of the walnut grain to truly shine.
