Antique Chinese buffet in solid wood with original patina – China, circa 1930

Antique Chinese buffet made of solid wood, nearly two metres long, originating from China and dated around 1930. An exceptional piece due to its scale, it sits midway between a provincial honour buffet and a family altar table, representative of large-scale provincial Chinese furniture from the early 20th century. In traditional Chinese homes at the beginning of the 20th century, buffets of nearly two metres presided over the main rooms, serving dual functions: storing precious items, clothing, and textiles in their interior compartments, and serving as a display platform on the continuous upper surface, where vases, lamps, photographs, and honour pieces were exhibited. The almost architectural proportion of this piece — nearly two linear metres — places it within a structural furniture reading, which orders an entire wall without the need for side pieces. It is constructed from local solid wood (presumably pine or elm) with a façade organised into a sequence of doors, drawers, or built panels and a panel. Traditional Chinese carpentry without nails, based on mortise and tenon joints, ensures structural stability despite its size. The pulls, wherever present, are original forged iron rings on plates.
