This rectangular coffee table illustrates the controlled meeting of the rigour of neoclassical architecture and extreme Oriental exoticism. The frame rests on four solid brass legs shaped with fine fluting, finishing at the base with delicate "toupie" feet. The stability and elegance of the structure are ensured by a fine "X"-shaped stretcher at the base, joined in the centre by a fluted rosette. The top of the legs forms a strict brass ingot encasing a heavy lacquered wooden top. The latter, against a deep black background, displays a rich decoration of chinoiserie scenes (animated landscapes, pavilions, and floral motifs) executed in golden and coppery hues. The combination of architectural brass and lacquer panels (often reclaimed from old Coromandel lacquer screens or custom-ordered) is one of the signature hallmarks of Maison Jansen in the mid-20th century. Founded in Paris in 1880, this international decoration firm became famous for furnishing the global elite (from the Windsors to the White House). Under the direction of Stéphane Boudin, Jansen brilliantly reinvented the Directoire and Louis XVI styles by blending them with exotic touches, thus creating highly sought-after pieces of "flying furniture" by the Hollywood Regency movement. Condition report: Overall good condition. The brass structure shows a natural and even patina of use, with minute traces of oxidation inherent to its age. The lacquered top exhibits normal signs of wear (surface micro-scratches and slight rubbing), without any major lacquer loss, reflecting its use. This sculptural and timeless piece will assertively structure the central space of a demanding living room.
