Rare Dutch brutalist oak armchair with integrated side table – 1950s
This exceptional brutalist armchair from the 1950s was made in the Netherlands of solid oak. The robust, sculptural design with its tall split back is a real statement and reflects the raw, honest formal language of brutalism. A striking feature is the wooden side table integrated into the armrest – ideal for a book, a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. The seat and back cushion are upholstered in a fabric with a subdued floral motif, which forms a soft contrast with the sturdy oak. A rare and idiosyncratic design; over the decades the wood has developed a deep, expressive patina. A sculptural statement in a brutalist, wabi sabi or eclectic interior, for example as a reading chair. Good condition, with signs of use and patina consistent with age.
