Jean royère was a french interior designer known for his light, plush and playful furniture. Born in paris, france in 1902 to a wealthy family, he initially worked as a banker before leaving in 1931 to apprentice with pierre gouff, From whom he learned the meticulous craftsmanship of furniture making. Royère won a prestigious competition for the luxurious restaurant in 1934. To design the hotel carlton on the champs-élysées. He founded his own company in 1944 and began to build a global clientele, opening offices in cairo, beirut, tehran and são paulo, with famous clients including king farouk, king hussein of jordan and the shah of iran. He died in 1981 in new york, ny, just a year after moving there. The museum of decorative arts in paris held a museum exhibition of his work in 1999 and was the subject of a major posthumous retrospective at sonnabend gallery in new york in 2008.
