18th-century Aubusson tapestry. Large example of a French/Belgian 18th-century tapestry. In the Netherlands, these are often called Gobelins, but that is not a generic name for all antique tapestries. Gobelin was just a very famous producer of tapestries. Our example comes from France and dates from the 18th century. On this 18th-century tapestry, you see an idyllic, wooded landscape. In the foreground are large trees with dense foliage, in dark green tones with lighter accents on the leaves. Through the trees, you look at a clearing with water, possibly a river or pond with plants and shrubs growing along the bank. In the background, you see a lighter, almost golden landscape that creates depth, with hills or fields in the distance. The whole gives a calming, almost dreamy atmosphere, typical of pastoral scenes from that time. Signs of use consistent with age and as we are used to with tapestries of this age. Restored in several places. See photos. Feel free to ask for a video or more photos.
