Beautiful engraving made by john boydell from a work by claude lorrain. It depicts shepherds guiding their cattle through the forest in front of a port landscape with boats. On the back of the frame is glued the label of the framer with the words: "maurice rousseau antique prints". Numbered 26. The painting from which the engraving is derived was in the private collection of the duke of devonshire. Claude gellée, better known as claude lorrain, was born in 1600 and died in 1682. He is a painter, draughtsman and engraver from lorraine. He was an independent artist and a figure of the landscape style. He exhibited his first painting at the age of 29, which is now on display at the philadelphia museum. From 1635, his work will be more and more recognized and will be in great demand. He even has important clients, such as pope urban 3 and king philip 4 of spain. He will be struck by gout disease and will end his life entirely devoted to art. John boydell (1719-1804) was an english publisher and engraver, specializing in reproduction engravings. Frame size: 38cm (15 inches) X 33cm (13 inches).
