Cantilever armchair S 533 RF original, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Thonet. Designed in 1927, this armchair is among the very first and most important cantilever models in the history of design and marks a major milestone in modernism. In preparation for the Weissenhof estate in Stuttgart, Mies van der Rohe focused on the cantilever seat principle developed by Mart Stam and created a completely new and elegant interpretation. With its characteristic generously curved steel tube form, the S 533 combines technical innovation with architectural lightness and remains one of the most iconic Bauhaus models today. The armchair is made of curved and chrome-plated round steel; the seat and backrest are upholstered with natural rattan caning. The structure formed from a single steel tube gives the armchair its characteristic elastic suspension and exceptional seating comfort. Its transparent formal language and the quality of its materials make the S 533 both a functional seat and a sculptural icon of design – in the office, in a reading nook, or at the end of a table. A total of four identical armchairs are available; we are happy to sell them in pairs or as a set. Condition: excellent vintage condition. The original rattan caning shows no breaks, damage, or stains. The chrome only shows a few minor signs of age-related use. An exceptionally well-preserved example of one of the most important Bauhaus and Thonet classics. Dimensions: approx. 50 × 77 × 82 cm, seat height 44 cm (width × depth × height)
