Offered by Antik Center Berlin, specialists in European fine art, antique furniture and decorative objects. An exceptional neoclassical secrétaire à abattant (fall-front secretary cabinet), crafted in figured mahogany with rich bronze appliqués, circa 1780. This piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of late 18th-century European cabinetmaking at its finest. The superstructure features a stepped crown with an egg-and-dart gilt bronze frieze, a central cabinet door adorned with an oval bronze medallion depicting a winged classical figure, likely Hymen (Hymenaios), the god of marriage ceremonies – a motif highly characteristic of neoclassical furniture of the period. The flanking drawers are fitted with elegant lion's head ring pulls. The fall-front reveals a beautifully fitted interior with multiple drawers, open compartments and ebonised columns – all perfectly proportioned and fully functional. The lower section comprises two large drawers and a shaped base drawer with a distinctive arched panel, resting on square tapered feet. Throughout, the exterior veneers display the characteristic flame mahogany figuring typical of the finest cabinetmaking of the era. Fully restored and in very good condition, with minor age-consistent wear. Professional sale with a 14-day right of withdrawal for consumers. In case of withdrawal, the buyer bears the direct costs of return shipping and must ensure safe, secure packing and transport.
