Monumental Pine School Library Bookcase from Warsaw, Poland, 1920s

Impressive large-scale library bookcase originating from an old school in Warsaw, Poland, crafted from solid pine. The piece dates to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1920. The bookcase consists of two substantial sections. The upper section features six glazed doors with spacious adjustable shelving. It retains an interesting traditional wooden shelf-adjustment system, using shaped wooden supports that can be positioned at different heights. The upper section measures 122 cm in height. The lower section features six paneled doors, providing generous storage space, and measures 80 cm in height. A particularly interesting detail is the presence of old inventory and institutional markings, preserved from the cabinet’s former use. These markings were intentionally retained as part of the piece’s history and authentic institutional character. The bookcase has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration in our workshop. The previous dark-painted finish was carefully removed, revealing the natural pine and its beautiful grain. The structure was restored while preserving characteristic original elements and traces of age. The entire piece was then finished with oil, enhancing the warm tone and natural character of the old pine. Despite the restoration, the cabinet retains its authentic character, including minor traces of age and previous use that form an integral part of its history. With its monumental scale, restrained proportions and distinctive provenance, this bookcase makes an impressive statement piece for a large interior.
