Oil on canvas, dogs by Gabriel Süe

Oil on framed canvas representing 5 pack dogs. They are Saintonge gascons or blue Gascony. This oil is signed by Gabriel S-E. Out-of-frame dimensions: 100 x 80 cm Superb tawny period of the artist. Gabriel See 1867-1958. He is the nephew of the writer Eugene See. He left the Julian Academy and continued his work alone, preoccupied with colour and the search for movement, especially for his paintings of packs and marines of Chausey Island. In 1896, the rendering of the movement emerging from Gabriel Sue's paintings, seen in a common friend's house, intrigued Toulouse-Lautrec, who, to learn about the technique used, gave him an appointment at Reynolds, at the Irish and American Bar, where he crunched the acrobatic evolutions of the clown Chocolat. Until 1912, his base remained Paris, cradle of painting at the time, where he had his studio. He studied the packs of Normandy, Guillet pack in Saint-Sever-Calvados, Aquitaine (Fontaine Henri pack in Marmande (Lot-et-Garonne), Beuil in Captieux (Gironde), Corteaux in Preychac, Clarayon Latour... and his own pack in Servanches in the Dordogne. He travelled to Italy, Spain (Prado Museum), Algeria and Tunisia with his painter friend Édouard Saglio (born 1867). However, if he rubs shoulders with the world of Parisian painting, Sue remains a loner. Wild life with packs in the wild is a vital necessity. In 1910, after twenty years of engagement, he married Marie Breen, an Irish woman and an associate professor of letters, and settled permanently in the small village of Servanches in the Dordogne, of which he was mayor. A country painter, he exhibited with the great painters of his time until his death in 1958.
