Antique three-door pine wood sideboard – China, circa 1900

This antique three-door pine wood sideboard is a Chinese piece with smooth panels, rounded corners, and pull rings. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where the pine was joined with mortise and tenon joints and finished with a thin lacquer. It is the most austere storage piece in this series: without carving, without paint, without added ornamentation. The entire formal decision lies in the proportion, the rhythm of the three doors, and the rounded edge that runs along the upper corner of the case. The body is made of solid pine on six straight square-section legs. Three framed panel doors open to an interior with a full-width shelf and compartments separated by vertical stiles. The handles are small iron rings on rosettes, and the plinth is resolved into three recessed panels. The original lacquer has almost entirely disappeared, leaving the pine exposed, with dark veins tracing the grain against a honey background. The upper edge retains a soft sheen from use. The surface is uniform and without repainting. With a height of 75 cm, it serves as a dining room sideboard, an entryway piece, or a television stand.
