Repoussé brass log chest – late 19th century

This rectangular embossed brass chest, with cut-away front corners, opens with a lid mounted on iron hinges. The latter gives access to a large storage space. The embossed brass technique consists of creating relief decorations by pressure from a thin metal plate. The top represents an exterior scene with horsemen and divinities. The facade, sides and cut sides depict interior scenes of a tavern. These delicately crafted sheets of brass are riveted to the wooden frame. Useful and very decorative, this log chest can have a completely different use, for example a laundry chest. ******** period: late 19th century excellent condition.
