Antique Central European chest of drawers with four drawers in cherry-toned stained wood, made in Central Europe in the early 20th century. A domestic piece with generous proportions, it sits between a main bedroom chest and a family storage unit, representative of the Biedermeier-Gründerzeit tradition at the end of the Wilhelmine era. In bourgeois Central European homes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the tall chest of drawers was the centrepiece of the marital bedroom. It stored linen, fabrics, and personal effects in four graduated drawers — the top one narrower, the lower ones increasingly deeper. Its simple construction, with flat fronts and finely moulded side pilasters, directly inherits from the Biedermeier style. It is made of solid wood with cherry-toned stained fronts and sides. The four drawers are assembled with hidden dovetail joints and retain their original oval brass handles with engraved escutcheons, as well as the rectangular brass lock entries. The fluted side pilasters, the carved rosettes at the upper corners, and the elevated base on a plinth organise the verticality of the whole. Details.
