A wonderfully characterful set of four bentwood armchairs designed by Czech furniture designer Antonín Šuman and manufactured by TON in Czechoslovakia in 1988. The chairs feature elegant bent beech frames finished in their original warm cream paint, paired with original upholstered seats in a beautiful muted red-pink fabric. The unusual colour combination gives the set a distinctive late-1980s character while remaining surprisingly easy to combine with contemporary interiors. Šuman worked for Thonet and later TON from 1949 and became an important figure in the development of Czechoslovak bentwood furniture. For this model, he reworked an earlier Thonet form, modifying the armrests to create a cleaner, more contemporary profile. The chairs remain in very good vintage condition. We have deliberately retained the original painted finish and upholstery, including the small marks and areas of wear accumulated over nearly four decades. The upholstery has been carefully cleaned and all four chairs have been checked and prepared for use in our Brno workshop. Comfortable and generously proportioned, they are ideal around a dining table but would work equally well as occasional or desk chairs.
