Description
Moon mask of the Baoulé in Côte d'Ivoire. Size: 32 x 19 cm Provenance: private collection, France Dating: 1950-60's Materials: Wood. Provided with certificate of provenance written by an independent expert This African mask in style similar to that of the Master of Kamer active in Côte d'Ivoire in the 1920s represents the Moon. This is a subject rarely illustrated in African art. This type of traditional Baoulé masks representing natural phenomena such as the rainbow, the setting sun and the moon, are usually exhibited at the beginning of the Gbagba procession, to "heat" the space before the arrival of the larger dance masks.
