Art Nouveau ceramic platter in gilded basket with grapevine motif, Europe

This Art Nouveau platter with burgundy ceramic set in an openwork basket featuring grapevine motifs represents the refined craftsmanship of European decorative arts. The deep bordeaux glazed ceramic paired with gilded metalwork creates a composition that embodies the era's devotion to organic forms and natural beauty. The piece consists of two integrated elements: an oval ceramic dish and an elaborate openwork basket serving as its frame. The ceramic insert, covered in rich burgundy glaze, sits within a structure that mimics intertwining vine branches. Gold finishing highlights the dimensional quality of the ornament — leaves and grape clusters emerge from the metalwork, transforming a functional object into sculptural art. The arched handle rising above the dish continues the botanical theme, completing the harmonious design. The Art Nouveau movement, flourishing at the turn of the twentieth century, sought to dissolve boundaries between fine and applied arts. European workshops competed to create objects where utility met artistic expression; platters, vases and centrepieces became canvases for demonstrating exceptional decorative skills. The grapevine motif, representing abundance and joie de vivre, ranked among the period's most beloved design elements, interpreted countless times yet always with fresh artistic vision. This platter serves beautifully as a decorative centrepiece in spaces embracing classical elegance or eclectic arrangements. Its dimensions accommodate fruit displays, confections, or simply stand alone as a focal point of table decoration. Condition has been assessed as good, reflecting the durability of materials and quality of original craftsmanship.
