This antique carved and polychrome sideboard made of fir wood features a façade with six panels carved with diamond patterns and carved friezes at the top and bottom. The surface retains its original polychromy in blue, red, green, and yellow. It originates from the high plateau of western China, dating from the end of the Qing dynasty, where fir was worked using a traditional mortise and tenon assembly. Furniture from this region belongs to the cultural area of the Tibetan plateau and reflects the combined influence of western China and Tibetan tradition. The polychromy on flat carvings — common on chests, low benches, and tables — used mineral pigments that the region's dry climate preserves for decades. Low chests of this type were used in the home to store textiles, festive clothing, and ritual objects. The body is constructed from solid fir. The façade is divided into six square panels in reserve with carved diamond patterns. Above and below run zigzag carved friezes and continuous motifs. The sides feature carved consoles with scalloped edges and small wrought iron handles. The assembly is traditional Chinese mortise and tenon, without screws. With a height of 60 cm, the piece sits between a low chest and a storage bench. Details. Dimensions: Length 242 cm – Depth 45 cm – Height 60 cm. Style: Qing Dynasty.
