Antique enfilade carved from fir wood – China, circa 1930

This antique sideboard, carved from fir wood, features a façade with five panels carved with floral motifs and continuous friezes along its upper and lower edges. It originates from north-western China, dating from the late Qing dynasty. Measuring 220 cm in length and 65 cm in height, it sits between a low chest and a storage bench. In rural homes of the Hexi corridor, sideboards with carved façades served both as seating and storage at the foot of the kang. The height of 65 cm makes them suitable for sitting and placing trays and utensils. The dual function — bench and chest — is real and observable in the regional typology. The body is constructed from solid fir. The façade is divided into five square panels in reserve with plant sculptures inside (rosettes and stylised leafy forms). Above and below the panels run carved friezes of interlaced leaves. The sides show a smooth panel with a peripheral frame. The assembly is traditional Chinese with mortise and tenon joints, without screws. The top is a continuous board. The carving was done with a chisel, featuring a firm and regular line. The patina retains the light tone of aged fir, with darkening in the recesses of the relief that highlights the design. The upper surface shows natural signs of use: small longitudinal cracks and areas polished by handling. The overall condition is well-preserved. Details.
