Magnificent patinated and pierced brass vase from the 1920s. Europe, 1920s. Made from a World War I artillery shell, created by a soldier or an artist during or just after the war. The vase features a long, slender silhouette, polished to a soft golden sheen. Near the rim, the metal has been carefully cut and wavy to create a crown or flower-shaped edge. Below, a series of geometric pierced openings, both circular and rectangular, add rhythm and lightness. Strangely, it almost resembles Scandinavian modernism. Remarkable craftsmanship, the cutouts are slightly irregular, indicating handmade production with simple tools, not industrial machines. This detail is wonderful. This vase unites the interesting history related to these trench art objects with great style and elegance. A true gem.
