Former Godin-Lemaire cast iron coal bin in Brussels

The godin-lemaire foundries and manufactures registered cast iron coal bins in their catalogue at an early stage. These tanks replace, inside the dwelling, the simple coal buckets. The bins, equipped with a hinged lid, are placed near the heating and cooking appliances, of which they are the indispensable accessories. They contain the amount of fuel consumed in a day by the device they serve. The shape and decoration of the charcoal bins give them the appearance of small ornamental furniture. They are made of ordinary cast iron or enamelled cast iron in a color in harmony with that of the enamel of the stove or stove they accompany. In the opening at the front of the lid is the handle of the coal shovel used to power the fireplace of the heater or cooking appliance. The model of the anthrax tray no. 3 bis appears in the 1880 album of the company of the familistère de guise godin & cie. It was manufactured until 1914. It differs from anthrax tray no. 3, the model of which has existed since at least 1863, only in its capacity: tray no. 3 bis contains 12 kg of coal instead of 16 kg for no. 3. The container is provided with three legs. The top, comparable to that of tray no. 4, offers a molded decoration whose motifs are from the classical ornamental repertoire. The edge is formed of godrons, the fixed part wears a grimacing leafy mask, while the lid has a shell surrounded by oves. According to the inscription on the top, the example of the family of guise was manufactured in the factory of brussels, under the management of godin, between 1880 and 1888. It is made of cast iron enamelled in black. H: 34 cm / l: 40 cm / d: 60 cm. A rare piece !!.
