Shiro Kuramata Bookshelf for Cappellini 1970

The double-sided Bookshelf, designed by Shiro Kuramata for Cappellini, is conceived as a self-contained module made of white matte lacquered panels. The irregular alternation of compartments is not a decorative choice but reflects a clear intention: each object deserves a space proportionate to its form. This generates a deliberately uneven layout that disrupts repetition and introduces a dynamic visual rhythm. While structurally solid, Bookshelf conveys a sense of lightness, almost graphic in character. The balance of voids and the absence of symmetry lighten the volume and suggest a non-hierarchical approach to use. It can stand alone as a visual focal point, or be placed in sequence to create a continuous composition. Thanks to its double-sided design, it also functions effectively as a room divider, allowing light and air to pass through. Bookshelf avoids imposing fixed uses or arrangements; instead, it invites interpretation. Objects become part of the composition, actively shaping the relationship between space and container. Most likely this particular bookshelf was made in 2012, underneath the base there's written in marker 23-6-2012. The Bookshelf is in very good condition. It has 2 tiny repaired damages, as visible in the last photo.
