Important showcase library in noble wood and marquetry, stamped A. Bastet, Lyon, remarkable for the richness of its decor and the quality of its cabinetry. With an architecturally composed and perfectly symmetrical design, the piece features a central glass cabinet flanked by two side compartments. The central showcase, equipped with several glass shelves, allows for the display of collectible items, porcelain, or glassware. It is topped by a lower compartment closed by two doors decorated with vertical fluting. The two side sections open with tall doors and offer numerous internal shelves. Their facades are particularly notable for their geometric marquetry panels in trompe-l'œil, composed of a repetition of cubes creating a beautiful depth effect. The lower panels also feature geometric marquetry arranged in a diamond pattern. The whole is rhythmically accented by fluted uprights and enriched with significant gilded bronze ornamentation: friezes of interlaced rings, rosettes, decorative drops, handles, and lock entries. The upper part is crowned with a central moulded projection that enhances the architectural elegance of the piece. An old plaque preserved inside bears the inscription: “Lyon – Upholsterer-Decorator – A. Bastet – Antique Art, Art Nouveau – 3 and 5, rue du Président Carnot” The piece also bears the signature “A. Bastet – Lyon, ” constituting an interesting testimony to Lyonese furniture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With its generous dimensions, the finesse of its marquetry, and the abundance of its ornaments, this library is a particularly decorative piece of furniture. Period: late 19th century.
