The Viscontea suspension, an iconic piece designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos in the early 1960s, perfectly illustrates the Castiglioni brothers' experimental approach to lighting and their exploration of new materials and production techniques during the post-war period. The sculptural lampshade is formed around a delicate metal frame, covered with a translucent resin resembling a cocoon. The tension between the rigid internal structure and the soft membrane creates the lamp's distinctive organic silhouette, featuring a rhythmic succession of curves and pronounced vertical ribs. When off, the Viscontea presents a subtle, almost immaterial appearance, revealing the warm, natural tone and fibrous texture of its surface. Once lit, the translucent material beautifully diffuses light, highlighting the internal structure and creating a soft, warm glow. This design reflects the innovative character of early Flos fixtures, when the company collaborated with prominent Italian designers to experiment with projected polymer materials, initially developed for industrial applications. The resulting shape lies halfway between a functional luminaire and a sculpture, making the Viscontea instantly recognizable from all angles. This example retains a beautiful antique patina, with visible variations and signs of age across the surface of the cocoon, characteristic of its era and material. These features give the lamp an authentic and particularly enchanting appearance.
