We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely original hall bench circa 1890 by Jas Shoolbred of Tottenham Court Road, made of walnut and brass. A very aesthetically pleasing, highly collectible hall bench, well crafted by the genius that was Jas Shoolbred. The bench has been cleaned, waxed, and polished from top to bottom, showing a beautiful patina from years of honest use and authentic age. Please note that all measurements are taken at the widest point. James Shoolbred and Co. (also known as Jas Shoolbred) was founded in the 1820s at 155 Tottenham Court Road. Originally a fabric merchant supplying the furniture trade. By the late 1860s/early 1870s, the company began designing, manufacturing, and selling high-quality furniture of their own design. Their sophisticated designs referenced Regency aesthetics inspired by antiquity - Greek/Roman styles. The company’s sales catalogue included guides for Victorian homeowners on how to arrange room sets for a desirable aesthetic, 'a guide to good taste'. In the 1880s, Shoolbred opened the first department store in the city on Tottenham Court Road, London. By the mid-1880s, Shoolbred had received a royal warrant, a testament to the quality of their furniture. The company ceased trading in 1931. This item is available for collection from our warehouses in Pulborough. Condition: Please refer to the very detailed photos that are part of the description regarding the condition. Please note that antique and original period items such as leather seating will always show a natural patina in the form of creases and wear. We recommend annual waxing to ensure that no moisture is lost, and also that hand-dyed leather is not recommended to be left in prolonged direct sunlight as it can dry out and discolour.
