African art-dogon-mali-wooden statue. Figurative effigy of an african woman. Standing with her hands on her thighs. In african dogon tribal art, this type of sculpture most often adorned the family altar. Often sculpted to order, dogon statues can be the object of worship by the entire community. However, their functions remain little known. The dogon people are renowned in african art for the myths and beliefs relating to their cosmology. They live southwest of the niger bend in the mopti region and at the foot of the magnificent cliffs of bandiagara where I acquired this beautiful statuette in the 1980s. Dim 38 * 11 cm.
