Animated Landscape with Pilgrims and the Mill Dutch School of the 17th Century Oil on Large Canvas. Important animated landscape attributable to the northern Netherlands of the 17th century, depicting a lively scene near a watermill. The composition is organised around a deeply rutted path, used by several popular figures: pilgrims, peasants, travellers... The work bears no visible signature. The treatment of the landscape, the presence of the mill, the bustling road, the pilgrims, and the fortified town on the horizon allow this composition to be linked to the realm of Dutch or northern landscapes of the 17th century. Condition: Re-canvas mounted on a wooden frame. Regular and healthy network of cracks. Very good overall condition. Localised retouching in the lower part, seemingly executed in gouache, without affecting the readability of the composition. The whole presents a good structural stability and a satisfactory view of the scene. The frame has some missing areas that have been regilded. Signs of wear, rubbing, and small scattered chips on the outer edge. Old circular stamp on the reverse, affixed to the frame.
