Zinc tankard ZINNKRUG 1723. The tankard is adorned with images of the famous physicians. According to tradition, Saints Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers born in Arabia in the 3rd century. Both were doctors, and even surgeons, who treated patients without asking for money. They attracted many people to the Christian faith. They were beheaded during the persecution of Diocletian in 303 in Syria. 26 Sept. 2025. Galen (Claudius Galenus) was a Greek physician of antiquity who practiced in Pergamum and Rome, where he treated several emperors. Throughout his life, Claudius Galen held various professions, including philosopher, surgeon, pharmacist, and biologist. In Greek mythology, Asclepius (in ancient Greek Ἀσκληπιός / Asklêpiós or Esculape, which is the French name for the Greek god, in Latin Aesculapius) is a Thessalian hero in the Homeric epic and later, in classical times, the Greco-Roman god of medicine. The son of Apollo, he was struck down by Zeus for resurrecting the dead. On the lid, very likely a symbol of the owner or the healthcare establishment.
